Where did that week go?

Good morning

Ok where has the past week gone? It seems in a whirl of appointments, meeting and generally chasing my own non-existent tail! How can it be that I now have children old enough to be (1) sitting GCSEs & thinking about A level choices and (2) choosing GCSE options?? Doesn't seem two minutes since the highlight of our after school time was a reading session with Biff, Chip, Kipper & Floppy and learning times tables. Now there seem to be constant forms to fill in and choices to make that affect the rest of their lives!

With all this going on there has been little time for crafting this week - however I have cracked the art of crocheting flowers with a little help from the wonderful Lucy & Attic24 - I love her tutorials - lovely clear pictures and idiot proof instructions;

This just needs a brooch back sewing on and then I'm sure it will be worn lots and lots.

We've had a real mix bag of weather in the last few weeks - almost springlike days, some very wet ones and a couple of decent frosts too. The borders in the garden are starting to spring to life and I snapped this first snowdrop the other day - its since been joined by a few friends;

As its almost the end of the month, I thought it was time to play with MosaicMaker to come up with the first monthly mosaic of 2012;

Right I suppose as its Friday it means time to write a shopping list - the cupboards and fridge are looking bare again. BTW did you see Superscrimpers on Monday night - did you see how much food that family threw away in a year?? Whilst my bill will be over £50, we won't be throwing anything away - if we buy it, we use it - I always check the dates on things and if I won't use it straight away then it gets frozen. The dreaded use by dates on most things - apart from meat/fish - get ignored - MrVV has survived for 22 years living with me and eating yoghurts etc which are several days past their dates!

Have a good weekend whatever you are doing - we've friends coming for lunch and a late works Christmas do to enjoy!

Monthly Makes 2012 - January

Good morning

Thanks for all the comments on the CK review - I'm just sorry that so many people have had problems with stuff and have been left feeling disappointed. I do think that if we have a problem with things we should email these companies and let them know - I did - just waiting to hear back.

Anyhow, I thought I high time to show you my makes for January - I know its not over for another 9 days but next week is looking hectic so I don't think I'll get much more done.

I've started well - lots of smallish makes - some for pressies and others are destined for the craft fair pile. There's even a few of things in there for me!

From top left - a purse for a friend, infinity scarf for craft fair, owls - a mix of pressies and fair stock, 2 teacup candles - one for me and one for a pressie, THAT CK cushion, my first attempt a crocheted jar cover, bunting for the fair, my upcycled Debbie Bliss Eco cotton infinity scarf and more bunting.

I think that's not a bad load for a month - looking at my to-make list theres loads more still to make towards the fair - I need a raggie making week I think. Plus I've still loads of family birthdays coming up and several for my S&B group friends too.

I'll leave you with a self taken pic of my new scarf - its so soft and snuggly - I think more of this yarn needs to find its way into my stash;

Right - I can finally hear noises from upstairs - guess it means MrVV & the teenagers are starting to wake up. Time for more coffee and then lets see what Sunday has to throw at me - nothing to taxing I hope - I'd rather be crocheting!!

Product Review - Cath Kidston Crochet Kit in a Book Tin

Hello again

In fairness to other bloggers and potential buyers of this product, I thought it time to write a review. It wouldn't be fair only to write positive reviews and recommend things if I didn't balance it occasionally with reviews for stuff that wasn't so good.

I received the Crochet Kit in a book tin as a Christmas present - it was something I wanted and I was very much looking forward to some hooky fun whilst watching mindless television. I'm a big Cath Kidston fan and on paper this set seemed perfect for me. It promised so much - 6 balls of yarn in CK colours and instructions to make a cushion and of course a rather lovely tin for me to use afterwards to store my crochet bits and bobs in.

It started well - yes the colour were lovely and the initial instructions were easy to follow - though as it was a classic granny square I didn't need to follow them to closely. The yarn however was proving annoying to say the least - regularly it split and I had to pull back to sort this out. I got very annoyed at the regular joins in the yarn too and in places it thinned down to one strand -like it had been wound by a beginner and with not much care - not something you'd expect from a brand like this. Normally when I crochet I use a basic acrylic yarn from my local shop and I never have the same problems with that.

The next problem was as I started on the 2nd side I realised I wasn't going to have enough yarn to complete the project - again surely someone should have checked this during the development stage? I contacted CK and they promised to send me some extra balls of yarn.

I then started looking on the net to find that I wasn't the only person who had had these problems - several mentioned the very poor quality of the yarn and the fact there wasn't enough to complete the project - I advise any of those who had these problems to contact CK direct - then they might realise that they need to test these products out before selling them on to their buyers.

Even after being supplied with extra yarn it still didn't mean I could finish the project properly - the instructions became as clear as mud and I ended up colour matching from my own supplies and finishing it off my way.

The overall verdict - a product with a premium price that promises so much but fails to deliver.

Would I recommend this set to others? - no.

Will I buy from CK again? To be honest I've become quite disillusioned with CK and their products and the quality of the recent things I've bought is noticeably poorer than the original items. I think in future it will have to be something amazing before I hand over my hard earned pennies - and yes you can quote me on that!!

Another day - another cake

Happy Birthday Little Son - 14 today :)

Another chocolatey cake was asked for - and for a change I thought I'd add 14 candles rather than the number shaped ones - never again - it took me ages to light those!

All quiet here now - he's gone to the cinema with Big Son to watch the latest Sherlock movie.

We now have a 3 week gap before the cake making starts again!!

PIF winners and other stuff

Good afternoon

Did you have a good weekend? We did :) It started with a walk on Saturday morning with MrVV went via the local Panto (oh yes it did) and ended in a family meal out - rather lovely.

Right important stuff first - remember I was a PIF winner in December and in turn I offered 3 people the chance to receive a parcel from me sometime in the next few months??

Well there were lots of takers - sadly there can only be 3 winners. So in true blog fashion, the names were put into a vintage teacup and the following 3 were the first ones out;

In other stuff news;

I received some more yarn from Cath Kidston so I can finish my Crochet Tin project. Lets just say this hasn't been the experience I expect from a brand like CK and the quality of the yarn leaves a lot to be desired. I think in the fairness of it all, I shall be writing a proper review so that others who are considering buying it are prepared :(

Much better news - I decided the other night to make something for me - a fancied one of the infinity scarves I've made for pressies and the forthcoming craft fair. I decided to recycle some yarn I'd previously used for a couple of knitting projects (blog posts on 27.9.10. & 16.9.10.) Its a Debbie Bliss product her Eco cotton yarn - the colours are lovely and its great to work with. Firstly the 2 scarves had to be unravelled - that took a little while;

I've finished now the basic scarf - I'm just waiting for another ball to arrive so I can finish the edges off neatly and then I can show you the finished result.

Lastly for today - there have apparently been some fantastic sunrises/sunsets recently - sadly our house doesn't get to see them. In the mornings the rising sun is hidden behind other houses and trees and even in the afternoon its hidden behind a massive oak tree in a neighbours garden. I did manged to get one photo the other day which shows the glow of the setting sun, between the bare branch of our cherry tree and the said oak tree.

Right - another day - another birthday cake is baking - this time for little son who turns 14 tomorrow! Oh and there are parcels to wrap too.

Cake & thrifting

Good afternoon

Brrrrr - after almost springlike weather for a few days its started to turn chilly here in Suffolk. I cycled into town this morning and rather wished I'd worn my hat - apart from a cold head, my sightly damp hair got blown about and I came home looking rather too yeti like! I'm also sporting a rather eclectic selection of clothes - skirt, tights, 2 t-shirts, woolly waistcoat and I've just added a cardi too - back to warm & woolly again.However I am so loving being able to get out and about its going to have to get pretty cold before I stop my now daily cycles. So far my ankle is holding up well - in fact it seems more mobile and less swollen :)

The birthday cake I was baking in the last post turned out rather well;

The topping is a chocolate ganache made with 2 bars of MrVV's favourite Dairy Milk chocolate. As its rather rich it should last quite a few days - probably till its time for another cake next Tuesday when Little Son turns 14 - he's not so little now - he's as tall as me and those bones are still rumbling so am sure it won't be long till our different in height is very noticeable.

I also mentioned in my last post a lovely CS find - here it is - a 50's frosted hyacinth bulb vase;

Its cleaned up rather well and I'm in two minds whether to keep it or too sell it on.

One of my plans for 2012 is to be more thrifty and I've been spring cleaning cupboards to make sure that things in there are either being used or if they aren't then they need to sold on. I found at the back of one cupboard the base and coffee grinder from a long departed blender. I nearly put them in the car boot box when I had a brainwave. I like to keep a stock of breadcrumbs in the freezer and normally have to grate the crusts which is fiddly - I wondered if the grinder might work and be able to produce crumbs? Hurrah it did so its now allowed to stay and it means that all crusts can be crumbed much quicker;

Last night was finally our S&B group Secret Santa swap - its been hard getting the group together as real life often gets in the way. Well finally last night all those that wanted to take part were there. Parcels were secretly put into a bag and then when they were all in - the pile of pressies was put out into the middle of the table. Everyone took turns to choose a parcel - I wish I'd taken photos there were some wonderful makes.

Here's the contents of the parcel I received;

This embroidered heart hanging (I've shown you both sides) was made by one of the ladies who runs the group - I'd only been admiring earlier in the evening something similar she was making so I was thrilled with this. The fabric are all iridescent and I think this needs to hang somewhere where it can catch the light and the breeze - I have a place in mind - just need a hook putting in place.

Lastly the postie has just been - thank you Annie - The Felt Fairy. I won some bag handles in a recent giveaway - its part of the encouragement for the Monthly Makers. Am also loving the Boy George postcard that was in there - I so loved him when I was younger. I've got some fabric that will make the perfect bag - just need to find a template for what I have in mind.

Freewheeling :)

Good afternoon

I saw the physio yesterday and as you can see from the next photo - he said YES :)

So once I'd had a quick practise around the garden and down the drive this morning, it was time to load up my basket and head out into the big wide world - carefully. The old wives saying is right - riding a bicycle isn't something you forget. I headed across town to visit my Grandma - thought I'd surprise her. It was lovely to be able to visit under my own steam. I was there for ages having a coffee and good natter. I'm going back next week to start helping her with her housework again and also to have our weekly put the world to rights session.

Next stop, the yarn shop - I've starting making towards a craft fair and I needed desperately to replenish my yarn supplies further - once I got the new stuff home and put it into my basket, I couldn't resist taking a photo - so colourful;

I also called into all the charity shops including the one I help in. I'm starting back tomorrow to do a short shift - building up gradually as I get stronger again - can't wait. I found something in one of the other shops but I'll show you that next time - it needs a good clean up first.

The teacup candles I showed you in the last post came out really well - I'm very pleased with them. I think I'll be making more of these in the coming months. Just need to find some interesting containers as not everyone I know is a teacup sort of girl!

Lastly for today (am blogging whilst I wait for MrVV's birthday cake to cook - he reaches the grand old age of 45 tomorrow!), here's something I've been working on this week - felt owls. These are proving rather addictive to make - again more stock towards next months fair - however the dark blue & red one belongs to big son - he saw me making these and asked for one for himself - apparently owls are cool.

Right best go and check this cake and then possibly hook up a few more pieces of bunting with my new yarns.

A Little Bit of Hooking on a Friday

Good afternoon

Blimey the end of the week already. I hope everyone is ok after all the awful weather we've had this week? I was quite glad to have a few days indoors. Thanks for all the comments on my last post.

(1) I'm feeling much better - better than I have for months tbh.

(2) I've emailed CK and they are 'looking for some matching yarn' for me. I hope I hear something soon - certainly not what you'd expect from a company as high profile as that.

Well today has been a good one - the weather has been gorgeous - sunny and quite warm. I decided to do something I've not done for over 4 months - I walked into town and back - all by myself! It felt rather strange to start with not having someone there but I soon got used to it. It was lovely to have a wander and a good look about without being hurried up. Sadly the charity shops turned up nothing at all - lots of unloved christmas pressies lurking on the shelves and a distinct lack of pretty china and vintage wares. My favourite little shop opens again on Monday so I'm hopeful they might have some nice things for me to browse through.

Back to the hooking - I spent most of yesterday evening sitting at the computer, hook in one hand and best concentrating face on (yes the one with the tongue sticking out). I was looking at lots of the tutorials on Lucy's lovely blog. I thought it high time I progressed from granny squares to other sorts of crochet. Well here's the first 2 results;

One crochet jar jacket - just using random odds of yarn from my basket. I treated myself to the daffs when I was out today - sort of reward for my myself.

The first of what hopefully will be many Teeny Tiny Hearts - I picture strings of these all over the house.

My haul from town today - new yarn so I can start on some makes for the craft fair and for forthcoming birthdays, bobble trim to make feet for the owl in the first picture and a new magazine for those need to put my feet up moments.

Whilst I'm typing I'm waiting for another new project to set. I treated myself to some candle making supplies and have just made the first 2 - one for me and another for a pressie. I'll let you see the finished results next time - they now look like they are starting to set.

Have a lovely weekend, whatever you are doing. I'm hoping we'll get out and about as the forecast is promising. MrVV has also promised to give my bike an overhaul - I'm back to physio on Monday and I'm hoping to be given the green light to start gently cycling again.

Getting comfy

Good afternoon :)

Thanks for all the comments on my CK problem. I've contacted them via facebook and now email and am waiting a reply from them.

This is my view for most of today;

Aren't those stockings fetching!! The reason, a day stay in hospital yesterday after a minor 'female' tweak. Today I've been told to take it easy and the stockings can come off tonight - hurrah.

Its given me a chance to catch up with Great Expectations that I recorded over Christmas - 2 down, final part to go. I've also been adding another strip to my eventual 100 square blanket - now at 70 squares;

I've also caught up with the end sewing in on my Giant Granny blanket - now 36 rounds big;

I'll keep going with this one for as long as the yarn lasts - the one I'm using has been discontinued - I think I'll be able to get another 10 rounds added before I run out though.

There's someone I've been meaning to introduce you all too - his name is Jack and he arrived here with the VV family just before Christmas;

Isn't he a total hunk - all furry faced with a fat tummy - a bit like MrVV ;)

He was my win from a giveaway that Jackie @ Sew Special Bears had last year (sorry no link blogger is being a right PINTA today). Thank you again Jackie - he's gorgeous and he's still mine - little son hasn't even attempted to pinch him - I think after all these years I've mastered that 'don't even think about it' look!!

Right time to go back to the sofa - armed this time with a mug of tea and some painkillers!!

Belated Happy New Year

Good afternoon

A belated Happy New Year to you all. I meant to post yesterday but (1) ran out of time and (2) hadn't taken any photos!! Plus I got up late, got times wrong and we were in a rush to go from a lunchtime drinks party to a New Years Day family buffet tea!

Anyhow - am here now - better late than never ;). Can't believe its January - we've been out for a family walk today to Southwold and it was so warm and sunny;

I'm getting so much better at this walking lark - stamina is much improved - we just need to work on my speed now - so much of the time, this was my view;

Menfolk strolling off ahead and then stopping and waiting for me to catch them up!

Can I ask you all a question? Did anyone else get the Cath Kidston crochet tin set? I've started to make mine up and I've run out of yarn before I've finished. I've not enough to do the last 3 rounds of the back of the cushion. I could match with yarn I have here but I wondered if its a design fault in general? I was very frugal with the ends and wastage as I've made each square up.

I've also completed my first make of 2012 - I'll share that later in the month when I take part in the Monthly Make posts for 2012 (links in my sidebar).

Five minutes peace!!

Good morning

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas? We had a great day - just the 4 of us and I must confess that's our preferred way. We can please ourselves - and it means if we fancy a mid-morning doze on the kitchen sofa then its fine (one of us had a bit of a 'thickhead' for mixing her drinks on Christmas Eve!!).

Christmas morning started at 7.30am when the boys appeared in our room - armed with mugs of tea and their stockings to open. I do love this part and there are rarely any photos as I prefer just to watch it happen and remember it in my mind. They were very happy with their mix of pressies - including new hats which appear to have remained on their heads for the past few days.

Once stockings were empty and tea was drunk, it was downstairs to open the pressies under the tree. Wow such a lot this year and I'm pleased to say everybody loved everything - no pressies to 'regift' at all.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas

Good Morning

I know there are still 6 days left but looking at my diary there doesn't seem to be many blogging gaps left! The trouble when you are finally able to get out into the big wide world after almost 4 months is - you want to do it lots and fill the final week before Christmas up!! As well as the boring essentials - Doctors, opticians and physio theres the exciting things too. Off out tonight with my 2 best friends from school - one I've kept in contact with ever since and one I only got back in contact with this year (the miracle of Facebook). They've not seen each other for over 20 years now. We're off to the pub for drinks and catching up - can't wait :)

Anyhow it does mean that blogging is unlikely to happen anymore before the weekend - so here's one final slightly picture heavy post so I can tidy everything up.

Firstly, I was one of the lucky 3 ladies to receive a parcel from Anne @ Andamento as part of an ongoing PIF (Pay It Forward). Here's what I got;

A pretty brown paper package tied up with string - with the addition of a very festive smelling dried orange slice. Inside - such pretties;

The tiny nativity scene fits into its own matchbox, a wooden dove, felt mushroom, glass pebble magnet and bracelet (all made by Anne), a festive Phoenix card, a crocheted snowflake, chocolate coins and a mulled wine sachet. All lovely and all very much appreciated. Thank you once again Anne xx

Now the exciting bit - I now have to prepare parcels for 3 lovely people. So if you'd like to receive something lovely through the post sometime in the next 12 months (mostly likely by springtime) then leave me a comment on this post and tell me your 3 favourite colours and I'll choose 3 names on January 15th. I'll try and add a button to my sidebar later as a reminder too.

The final festive making has finished - just need to start on my collection of January birthdays now - and I've booked a fair for the end of February too :) I finished this fairy the other day - I don't think I'll be able to part with her - she is my favourite so far;

I made a final batch of christmas cards most of which have been delivered to family and friends now;

Two of my photos from my blog - tweaked with Picnik and then the photos were printed by Photobox - my task was to paste them onto card and then write them! I don't normally do this but I did have lots of extra spare time this year!

When the postie brought my PIF parcel the other day, he also handed me another one. I wasn't sure what it was but as it had my name on it, I opened it. Inside, a surprise pressie from a friend from another internet forum - this pretty coloured and jingly bag charm - isn't it just stunning - can you see all the knitting/sewing charms on there?

Right, I'd best be off - need to wake those sleeping boys of mine - I need to take one into town to get his glasses tweaked after they, his head and the car boot collided the other night!!

Final Pause in Advent 2011

Wow - the final one - just one week from now it will be Christmas Day - doesn't seem like 12 months since the last one!

As this is now my 3rd year of taking part in the Pauses and in fact my 3rd Christmas of blogging, its hard to think of something new to write and I try hard not to repeat myself - I do that enough the rest of the year. I'm turning into my Mum and Grandma who tell one person the same thing 6 times and the others not at all!!

I think today's theme will be Christmas past - here's a couple of photos from Christmases when those boys of mine were much smaller than me - they are still as excitable though;

Little son at a toddler group Christmas party - he'd be nearly 3 and for the first time happy to see Father Christmas - I think he understood what Father Christmas meant that year.

My now giant big son as a cute almost 5 year old. That big plate of food - of course he finished it - if I get a chance I'll snap his lunch before he demolishes it next weekend!!

Enjoy your final week before the 'big' day. I've the boys at home to help with some of the preparations - they like to point out oh so often how much taller & stronger they are than me now - so I might as well take advantage of them!! We've a brass concert this week to look forward too and then there's the annual pressie swap with my sisters at the end of the week when everyone has finished work. The final bit is my favourite - open air carol service on Christmas Eve and then home for a family meal.

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas.....

Good morning

Are you feeling festive yet?? I think today I am.

We tried hard at the weekend to bring some festive feeling into the VV household - we decided to put our tree up on Sunday. Things were gathered from the attic and cupboards and left in the front room till spare time was found. Once little son had been delivered to play carols in a little church in town, the remainder of us gathered in the front room. Big son has the attention of a gnat when it comes to low-tech stuff and soon wandered off to the safety of his gadget haven bedroom! This left just the 2 of us. The tree is easy - 3 parts and a stand.

MrVV then turns to me and asks 'Where are the lights?'

'In the box taped to the tree box' was my reply.

'Oh no they're not' he says in his best panto voice.

'Blast, well where are they?'

Off he trots to the attic - actually he grumps and huffs about this ;)

The attic is searched and no lights are found. Perhaps they didn't survive last christmas? Who knows - I can't remember what I did last week let alone 11 months ago!!

So we down decorating and head off to the nearest place that might sell Christmas lights - the Factory Shop in the next town. Hurrah they had lights - only coloured ones but at just £5 they'll do - hopefully they'll last longer than one year!

Anyhow - the tree is finally up and the decorations have exploded on there in their usual random chaotic muddle :) I've even managed to put some other bits and pieces up too - that meant housework had to be done as well - trouble is once you tidy one bit it makes the rest look bad!!

I've tried to take pics of the tree lit up in the dark - not sure I've got the settings quite right - however I did like this weird effect I got when I move the camera - Christmas light candy canes;

Now there's a tree, it means that presents can go under it - but they've to be wrapped first - the first few have made it under there;

Nice and simple - brown paper, recycled card tags and crocheted ribbon.

Some presents can't go under yet as they are still unfinished. Two fairies came off the production line yesterday afternoon and as it was dry decided to pose outside in the ivy for you;

Almost twins - there's a 3rd one that might get finished today.

I don't think I'll be taking photos outside today - the weather is yuck - very wet, cold and windy. I'm happily staying indoors - plenty to do - both boring (housework) and fun (baking & sewing).

Right - I'd best be off - the pastry has chilled for long enough and I need to make mince pies for visitors later.

I was sorting out the old cards from last Christmas the other day when I found 2 that made me stop and think. Then my eyes began to leak - a card from a dear school friend who died in March and one from my FIL who died in January.

This weeks pause is a simple one - for all those who aren't with us this Christmas - we are still thinking about you and missing you very much.

Cakes & looking forward

Good morning

Hope you are all well? and your festive preparations are going smoothly? Sort of slowly getting sorted - waiting for a parcel or two to arrive and then I need to plan a festive food shop nearer the time. There's the small matter of retrieving the tree from the attic - I've decided I want to put it up this weekend.

Apart from Christmas preparations and trying to catch up with jobs that are 3 months overdue! I've made sure I've found time to catch up with my Christmas mag reading & cake eating!

Yesterday was a baking day - the boys seem hungrier than ever at the moment and the cake tins needed refilling. As I was making pastry for a quiche for dinner it seemed a good idea to make extra for a batch of mince pies;

A good friend moved house last week so I thought I'd make her a card;

I've also continued with my December ritual of lighting a candle each day - I do this to bring light into the house during these darker days and use it as a point in my day to remember those that aren't with us anymore. It also reminds me that the dark days will soon be over and we've the lighter days to look forward to - the Solstice is the 22nd so after that the days will slowly start to lengthen.

The weather has continued to be pretty awful here - the wind has battered the garden. The cherry tree has almost lost all its leaves now - you can just see the start of buds that will burst into flower when the springtime comes;

I spotted another sign of growth the other day. Last spring I bought several pots of hyacinths to brighten the house out - when they finished they were left in the conservatory to die back with a view to planting them in the autumn. This got forgotten about with everything else going on. However I noticed that the bulbs had started to sprout again - so I've bought them all into the warm and I'm hoping they'll be flowering sometime soon;

Finally for today - good news - I'm stick free :) Had a physio appointment first thing this morning and he's said that I really don't need them anymore. I've also been told that I should be back riding my bike by the middle of next month - now that is something to really look forward too.

Peggy Fairy & A Felted Pudding

Good evening

Wow just how cold was it today?? Even with my customary 3 layers I was still cold. We were lucky here in Suffolk - no snow/sleet/rain but I saw on the news tonight that others have seen their first proper wintry blasts.

At least now I've finished my leg-warmers - though the boys have told me that I'm not allowed to leave the house in these if they are with me!

I tend not to worry if others don't like my 'look' - I'd rather be warm and woolly!

I managed to complete one of the jobs the other day that I'd initially planned to do in September once the boys went back to school. We all know why I've taken so long ;) I'm trying to empty my freezer to make room for some scrummy Christmas treats and there were 3 tubs of blackberries in there that I picked in August. Finally they got their chance to become jam;

You might have seen Dawn mention on her blog today about our little trip out together yesterday. We headed to Snape Maltings to the Cool Yule Christmas Market. Oh how brilliant it was. So many stalls with loads of wonderful handmade goodies. We spent ages browsing the stalls and of course neither of us came away empty handed;

Peggy Fairy made by a very clever friend of mine and the most wonderful needle felted Christmas pudding. Both are great and I can't wait to put them on my tree this weekend - just need to send MrVV up into the attic to retrieve it.

I bought this Acorn and Will brooch from another stall - I've seen these on loads of blogs and had promised myself one at some point - I do need a replacement for my felt poppy on my coat!!

I've been out today too - back to the hospital for a check up with the orthopaedic people. They are pleased with how I'm doing and I don't have to go back to see them again but just carry on with my weekly physio sessions (such hardship ;) ). Once they'd reassured me that I can't do any damage by just walking and I can reduce the number of supports in my shoes, there was only one thing on my mind - SLIPPERS. Again I'd planned to buy some in September - our house is tiled downstairs and whilst these are great in the summer in the winter they are cold on your feet. We stopped off on the way home so I could treat myself. Again not the most stylish of items but again warmth is far more important;

Fair isle, furry lined and pom-poms - what more could a girl ask for!!

Right that's enough for now - my computer is in the hall and its draughty in here so I'll bid you all goodnight.

2nd Pause in Advent 2011

Good afternoon

Well the festive build up has crept up a notch - the biggest thing I've noticed is amount of brass engagements my 2 players have entered onto the calendar. This weekend there have been 3 - fortunately due to sharing them between the other players in their section they've only had to do 2 each. With this in mind, my theme for this weeks pause is Christmas Music;

For my 2 players - Christmas music starts being played the first practise after their Remembrance parade and concert. This means that by December 1st they've played rather a lot of carols plus started practising for their big concert the week before Christmas.

^^^ Those pictures were taken yesterday at the Christmas Fair in town - the band walked through the streets with Father Christmas to draw people to the bottom of the high street where stalls, games and fairground rides awaited them.

Yesterday was a bit chilly and the ground was damp so it didn't feel as festive as some years. Sometimes the ground is frozen and there's a sprinkling of snow;

and other years they've struggled through the snow to get to the same engagement at Snape Maltings;

By the time Christmas Eve comes I think MrVV never wants to hear another carol - not quite the same for Little Son, he's still full of youthful enthusiasm - wonder if he'll feel the same after 30 years of playing (yep MrVV has played in the same band since he was Little Son's age!!).

Do you have a favourite piece of Christmas music? I'm torn between two - Once in Royal Davids City or Hark the Herald Angels Sing. When either of these get played - especially at the open air carol service on Christmas Eve, you'll find me singing along :)

Faith, Hope and Festive Charity Shopping Swap

Hello again

Well I turned the page on my calendar this morning - we've made it almost to the end of 2011. Its finally December - things start to get exciting and festive :) Now I've had this parcel almost a week but thought I'd share it with you once the proper festive month had begun;

I was paired with Caroline from Whats Happening At My House - a completely new blogger to me and one that I'll be staying in touch with from now on :)

A lovely easy swap brief - 5 pressies - one to be a decoration, something thrifted from a boot-sale or charity shop, chocolate and 2 others things you think your victim would like - easy peasy lemon squeezy. We exchanged emails of likes/dislikes and stalked each others blogs for clues.

Here are the results - firstly the parcel I received;

A christmas mag full of lovely ideas, some knitted tree decs, some candles with little star shaped holders, a festive mug and some chocolate coins.

These are so cute - can't wait to put them on my tree when I'm finally allowed to put it up.

This mug is just perfect for hot chocolate & the works - its been in use already :)

Now when Caroline told me her colours were ice-blue, silver and white, I decided to theme everything around those;

Chocolate coins, blue & silver reindeer decs, a button heart, fab blue nail polish and a handmade felt stocking. She's even the first person to get one of my homemade christmas cards. There was also a little something for her little man but I forgot to take a pic of that.

Thanks Caroline for being a great swap partner and to Lakota for organising everything.

Phew I think I'm finally up-to-date with my blog posts.

Photo Scavenger Hunt - November

Another month has come to an end and this rather wonderful tradition of sharing my Scavenger Hunt pics happens again. This is my 10th month of doing this - I missed January because of family stuff but otherwise I've completed each month and I'm pleased with myself for doing that. This month was for me probably the easiest - the only time where I had more than one picture for each heading! After some deliberation, here's my efforts for this month;

Poppy - the symbol of Remembrance pinned to my sons RBL uniform.

Memorial - the one on Aldeburgh seafront.

Silhouette - the view from the front window one evening as the sun started to set.

Something I've made - a felt poppy pinned to my coat.

Something purple - the Hebes in the garden were still flowering mid-month and attracting so many bees and insects.

Warmth - so unusual for November - ladybirds, sunning themselves on the bench in the garden.

Polka dots - on a toadstool - fly agaric I believe.

Lucky charm - my Good Luck Care bear - he sat on my desk during my end of school exams and others exams I've taken since.

Comfort food - sausage stew & mash.

Staircase - my nemesis at the moment - still going up and down on my bottom!

Something that lights up - the lava lamp on the kitchen dresser - it provides a cozy glow these dark evenings.

Self portrait - I hate having my photo taken and trying to take one of myself proved very tricky - this is the best of a very bad bunch.

Brrrrrrrrrr Monday

This morning saw our first ground frost of the season;

As my dear bloggy (and RL friend) Dawn put it in her post earlier, the silly season has begun. The festive madness has started especially for my 2 brass playing menfolk. Saturday saw them playing in Aldeburgh for the switch on of their Christmas lights. Apparently it all went well and there are some pics on Dawn's blog - including one of Little Sons right ear!!

I opted out of that particular one as I knew it would be a long afternoon and the lack of comfy seating would mean I'd have to do loads of standing around.

However, I did make it out to Little Sons training band engagement at Minsmere Bird Reserve yesterday afternoon. It was lovely the band played really well. Not easy to get pictures as the space they played in was rather tight - but here's one of little son - as you can see the training band is rather more casual than the full band;

Looking at the gig list next weekend is even more hectic - 3 engagements - have a feeling he'll be sick of carols by Christmas Eve!!

Not sure if I've told you before but I've a bit of a thing about postcards - I seem to collect them from all over and have a hanger on my kitchen door which is changed over regularly. The very clever Nina @ Tabiboo takes the most brilliant photos and she's turned some of her festive / wintry images into postcards - I couldn't resist;

Even the packaging makes a nice picture.

Inside - these 3 gorgeous cards - not too Christmassy so they can stay up for a while.

First Pause in Advent 2011

Thank you to Floss for organising another year of pauses in Advent. As other years there are lots joining in and the posters and their styles are all so different so if you've time, take a look at the list on Floss's blog and have a read.

I think by now most readers will know that I'm not a religious person - I pick and choose from lots of different beliefs and faiths. I know it seems strange evening taking part as Advent is such a part of the Christian calendar - I can't explain why I do this but I do enjoy it and I hope you do to.

One of my posts from the last Advent series about Simplicity is one of my most read ones ever so I must have got something right.

Onto my first theme for this year, its about taking things for granted.

We here in the Western World take it for granted that when we turn on a tap that clean & safe drinking water will come out. If we go to a supermarket, the shelves will be full and the prices (even allowing for the current increases) will be fairly sensible - imagine finding out that a simple loaf of bread costs half a weeks wages! Its something we take for granted that won't happen here (make sure you're listening Messrs Cameron, Clegg & Osbourne).

Most of our children take it for granted that come the morning of December 25th, there will be presents for them - either from Father Christmas or family & friends. Also that there will be a meal of some sorts - whether its a traditional Christmas lunch or perhaps for those in the southern hemisphere a barbecue on the beach.

I know I take stuff for granted - I did when I had this accident. I knew that I'd be looked after and that MrVV & the boys would rise to the challenge of looking after me and taking over many of the household tasks.

Perhaps just for once we could all think about what would happen if those things & people we take for granted let us down. What would we do, how would we cope?? Perhaps we should all let those special to us know how much we love them and not just take it for granted that they know.

So I'll say now - Thank you P, E & W for all your help over these past 3 months - we're now half way through this and hopefully it won't be long before I'm back to 'normal' again.

Progress and pretty things :)

Good morning

And yes it is a very good one today. The reason - I've had my first shoe wearing session outside the house in just over 12 weeks :) I've been to the physio and he'd very pleased with me. However it does mean next week I get more exercises added and more time in the gym. Its a lovely sunny morning here and when we got back I went for a kick in the leaves in the garden;

Its not been a bad week actually. I went out the other day with my MIL - we headed over to Saxmundham for a change of scenery. Firstly I traded loads of old bits of broken jewellery in for a lovely fat cheque. Then we headed down the high street for light retail therapy.

Firstly yarn - my leg gets cold and as I can't fit my boots on yet, I thought I'd knit legwarmers for around the house - after much pondering, I chose some Crofter yarn in a grey/deep pinks colourway. The ribbing proved a bit tricky as my knitting skills are rusty - once I cracked that it was fine - should have one by the weekend!!

A few other sewing essential were bought and then I glanced at the buttons - I spotted these and had to buy them - no plans for them yet though;

I found a wonderful shop that was stuffed full of pretty things - I need to go back there sometime soon as my MIL kept picking things up with wishful looks in her eyes - least now I've some ideas as to what she'd like for Christmas. This ring was too pretty to leave behind - its just costume not really silver/turquoise but very lovely;

My MIL gave me this little vintage OXO tin - she'd found it the other day in a sort out and was going to bin it but she thought I might like it - oh yes;

Time now for one small festive make - I love working in felt and each year make something new to add to my ever growing decoration collection - here's this years gingerbread house;

Do you remember the patchwork square I showed you that was going to be made into a big quilted hanging? Well it was finished and handed over at the party last weekend. My clever friend Lotti from our S&B group got the task of putting it all together - well she's blogged about it now so you can pop over and see the finished result here - its stunning.

Finally, I had a late night last night - MrVV & I headed to Ipswich for an evening of laughter with Bill Bailey. A brilliant show - my sides ache for laughing so much. I spotted another blogger in the audience - hi Dawn, hope you enjoyed the show too and your ice-cream ;)

Right that's enough for now. I'll be back at the weekend with my first Pause in Advent post - this is organised by Floss - we're now into our third year which means I really need to think about what my themes will be this year.

Product Review - Find-me-a-gift.co.uk - Retro Popcorn Maker

Hello again

Another day, another email asking me if I'd like to do a product review. This time it was it was Find-me-a-gift.co.uk and they asked if I'd like to review something from the kitchen gadget range. Now you know me and my love of cooking/baking etc - well I had a look at the list of suggestions and something slightly different jumped out at me. Something that I've wanted for a long while and something I knew the boys would have fun with and benefit from. I thought those boys of mine deserved a treat for all their hard work and support over the past few months.

The product I choose was a Retro Popcorn Maker;

The parcel arrived yesterday and a quick read of the instructions showed it was something that even I could operate! I was prepared for its arrival and had sent Little Son to the shops at the weekend for a bag of popcorn kernels.

Right time for some piccies;

Such a good looking piece of equipment - love the retro styling and the glossy red finish.

The lid doubles as a measuring cap - about 90g of kernels per batch - cost less than 20p!

Pour kernels into maker.

Place a bowl under the chute and switch on.

Realise a much bigger bowl is needed AND get an action shot (slightly fuzzy).

One batch made this bowlful and 2 smaller bowlfuls for the boys for a scrummy after school snack. You can add flavouring - this time we added a tiny sprinkle of salt.

The verdict from Little Son & Big Son - fab and a thumbs up.

The verdict from me - another thumbs up. Great for making a cheap and low fat snack. The machine uses no oil and instead realises on hot air to pop the corn. It takes just a few minutes to use and its something that will be getting loads of use from the boys - from healthy snacks to movie nights. I suspect even our Christmas tree will end up with a popcorn garland on it this year!!

Foodie makes and pretty parcels :)

Good morning

How was your weekend? I hope you weren't affected by the fog too much? We were lucky here - what fog we might have had overnight disappeared quite quickly leaving both Saturday and Sunday bright, sunny and a tiny bit chilly.

Now where did I leave things? Oh yes baking time. There was plenty of left over fruit from the Christmas cake, so Friday morning I spent more time in the kitchen baking and making;

Currant buns with cherries on top for my boys for after school

Then using a recipe I found on a blog last week - just can't remember whose! I made some fruit chutney - I tweaked the recipe to use what I'd got and trust me it smells & tastes delicious;

Some for us and some for pressies for family & friends :)

Saturday was CCM-day - Christmas Cake Making day. I started early as I knew from past experience the baking time is nowhere near the 3 hours the recipe claims - I think it was almost 4 1/2 by the time it was done - perhaps I was being cautious this year - even remembering to wrap the tin in brown paper;

It made the house smell very festive and most importantly it made it out of the tin in one piece!

Its now wrapped up and shut away only being allowed out for a dosing with brandy each week. There's just the matter of the battle with marzipan and icing to come - oh and I need to find some suitable decorations for the top - I'd like subtle but knowing me it will end up being OTT!

The rest of the weekend passed in a blur of parties - one for a S&B group friends 70th on Saturday night. It was a lovely evening and I think a total surprise to her. Just wish I could have got up and danced to the rock-n-roll singer that was providing the entertainment for the evening.

Yesterday afternoon saw my sisters and other assorted relatives assemble at my Grandma's house to help her celebrate her 86th birthday. Lots of loud mad games involving cushions were played and lots of food was eaten and a good time had by all :)

That would normally be enough for a blog post but there was a thud on the doormat a little while ago. A parcel for me from Ali @ Magic Beans. I'd won her little giveaway the other week. Here's what was in my parcel;

Feeling festive!

Good afternoon

I know, I know there's a strong feeling that Christmas should be kept in its box till December. However sometimes things happen and little bits start to escape from the box early - today was one of those days.

I've started spring cleaning - early for 2012 or late for 2011 - not quite sure. Anyhow whilst cleaning out the mug cupboard this favourite of mine made it to the front. So it had to be used and what better than with a warming mug of hot chocolate - ok so with added whipped cream and marshmallows. My defence, these were bought for the boys but of course needed testing first ;)

Oh yes those Scrabble letters are still on the table waiting to be washed!

What started all this festive stuff was when MrVV got back from doing a big shop this morning. Not only did he have his normal list but also a special list too. He's asked for a Christmas cake this year and today was the day to buy all the ingredients. The actual cake shall get made on Saturday but the fruit needs to start soaking;

The recipe is one I cut out of a magazine over 20 years ago - hence its tatty now and still in the old scrapbook I use. One day I'll make something smarter.

Once everything was weighed and measured and put into the huge mixing bowl there was the most wonderful smell in the air - pure Christmas.

The rest of the day has been spent taking it easy - I did far too much walking yesterday and am feeling it today. Never mind its a perfect excuse to get crafting. Sadly I can't show you any photos - everything I'm working on at the moment is for someone who might read my blog. I'll take photos and then share them with you once all the pressies have been safely delivered and opened.

As well as stitching, crocheting and knitted today, I've been reading. The festive reading pile grew this morning - MrVV treated me to the new Country Living magazine - I'd bought the Ideal Home last week. I love their calendar - it fits the space in my kitchen perfectly!!

Both are stuffed full of lovely festive ideas and pictures. Its enough to make you want to hunt out the carol CD and perhaps sneak a decoration or two up.

I won't but the temptation is there!!

Happy Dance Time!

Afternoon

No, not the can-can but a careful happy dance to celebrate a good day :)

The sun is shining today - hurrah - doesn't it make such a difference. Yesterday was grey & murky and it was almost dark at 4pm when the boys bumbled in from school.

A quick trip into town threw up some lovelies from my favourite little charity shop;

Vintage scrabble letters :) I got the letters, board & racks for just 50p :) The board is really tatty so that will probably just be recycled but I've some ideas what to do with the rest of it.

I'm a sucker for old childrens books and I was delighted to find 3 lovely books on the shelf. 2 are labelled with Christmas 1945 and the other dates from the early 60's. All had that not so lovely charity shop smell so shall be airing in the conservatory for a while;

The little red one is a Christmas book (Christmas is a time of giving by Joan Walsh Anglund) with many gorgeous illustrations in it. I've just picked one for today but will probably post more next month;

The two Slimtails books were printed during the 2nd World War and are marked to show they complied with the strict paper rationing rules. The illustrations are many just black & white but each book has a lovely coloured first page;

They wanted just 50p for all three books but I couldn't do that and gave them a bit more. The ladies in this little shop are so sweet, they commented they'd not seen me for a while and we had a good chat about injuries and also about mobility aids!!!

On the way home from the town, I made MrVV stop so I could walk from the bottom of our lane to home. I'd spotted something earlier and wanted to take photos. Not just any old toadstools this time - proper fairytale spotty, dotty ones;

I've also been to physio today - instead of just getting a leg massage I've been through to the gym part and have been practising my walking properly with just parallel bars to support me. I surprised myself with how well I was doing. The target for this week is more shoe wearing time and also to try and see how I get on walking outside without my moonboot. If that works then the next step (groan) is to get walking without my crutches - never know I might just be able to dance at the Christmas parties after all!!! Once I can do walk in just shoes we can work on getting my leg properly strong and improving my balance again. Hoping for normality by March 2012 - in time for my birthday!

Right time for some crochet and TV catch up - I missed most of Land Girls last week so its time to find out what happened!

Feels more like late summer than late autumn. The sun has been shining all day and its so mild out there. No need for a coat at all. To be honest this suits me fine at the moment - getting around can be tricky enough without adding ice or snow to the mix.

Here's what I've been doing since my last blog catch up style post;

Practising wearing shoes :) I can manage about 1/2 an hour at time at the moment (and only around the house) but very slowly I'm getting there. I can also only fit into this old pair of Converse as my foot is still slightly swollen but again progress :) Back to the physio this week - I've promised to try and wear shoes to walk into the session.

There have been a rather high number of days out in the past week too;

Lunch with my Dad & little Grandma - a rather lovely treat. I've got the hang of steps & stairs now with my moonboot so finally I got the pub lunch I'd been promised.

A trip to a big supermarket with my parents - now that might sound not exciting to some but to me it was wonderful. Being able to get some bits I've needed since August - stuff you can't send a man to buy. I've now loads of lovely warm tights, pairs of socks and new pyjamas. Having been indoors such a lot, the whole Christmas madness has passed me by. Scary to see how many massive trolley loads of 'stuff' were being pushed about. One got a bit close to me - perhaps he thought if he shoved me I'd move faster - he got a very hard stare and stern words from my Mum!! However I did enjoy a wander around the aisles to get a few bits for family & friends and I couldn't resist this chap for myself;

On Saturday I was dropped off in our little town and left to have a good wander around. I had a good stock up on yarn to finish some projects and to start others. I made it into a couple of charity shops too - finding things I needed for swaps. Whilst its more spring than autumn, I could leave this little lost lamb behind, he was only 50p;

Whilst I was out, little son decided that he'd do some baking - this time coffee buns with pale blue icing and sprinkles - tasted rather good AND he did the washing up!

The rest of this week seems to have been filled with crafting - finally my mojo has returned. I've a list of things I'd like to make for coming birthdays/Christmas/swaps and slowly things are being ticked off. This knitted monster is for my nephew - he loves things to cuddle so I think this colourful fella will go down rather well;

I finished the little mini-raggie - rather pleased with her. She's off to live with someone later this week and I shall start on a couple more as pressies for my little nieces;

Today has been a quiet one here. MrVV & Little Son have been out at 2 Remembrance Parades - they stopped off for a pub lunch inbetween. I've been pottering around catching up on some domestic stuff and starting another crochet project. I think my 2 blankets won't be growing bigger for a while now as other projects have leap-frogged over them.

Hello again

Another day - another product review. As with the others, I only review things that interest me - rather than for the sake of it. When I was asked to review http://www.perfume-click.co.uk/ and was given a shopping voucher to use to do this, I jumped at the chance.

Time to treat myself to something nice (I feel I've earned this after the past few months) and also to make a start on some festive shopping for family members. Whilst I can't show you everything I bought, I can show you what I treated myself to - this gift set from the Kate Moss Vintage Muse range

I choose this as this is a scent I've smelt before and its been on my wish list for ages. However when I compared the prices, I'm glad I didn't buy from the high street. Perfume-click's prices are considerably less than those of the high street and other online shopping sites. My set was just £10.95 whilst in other places online it was over £20! The same could be said of the other items I choose - I made a considerable saving buying this way - even the postage is cheap, just £1.95 and free if you spend over £50.

There was such a wide choice on the site - stuff I've not seen in the high street for many years and also the latest designer names. Even gifts for the younger members of your family;

Definately Autumn

Good evening

If there was any doubt about which season it was last week, then over the weekend its become more and more obvious that we are in the throws of Autumn;

The weekend started with a Friday night comfort food type meal - sausage stew and mash.

Whilst the weather on Saturday morning prevented me from getting out to see MrVV & Little Son in their parade, at least the rain stopped by the evening and we were able to get out to my littlest sisters bonfire & fireworks party. Taking pictures proved to be tricky whilst hanging on to my crutches, so here's one of the few I managed - small children having fun with sparklers;

The fireworks were great - the garden backs onto many others and it seemed we weren't the only ones having a party that night - the sky was very pretty.

Sunday was also damp & grey here - not really going for a hobble weather. Instead time to be indoors crafting - 2 works in progress;

A mini-raggie - just over 15cm tall - along side a 'normal' sized one.

The start of a knitted monster for a my little nephew for Christmas.

Today was pretty grim here too - if you've got my sunshine can you please return is asap.

Leftovers from a roast dinner yesterday meant soup for lunch today;

This afternoon was back to the physio for another leg massage ;). I've been set a task for the next week - to try to wear a pair of shoes!! Feels rather strange at the moment and I'm back to walking very slowly & carefully. For a while the rule is shoes in the house and moonboot outside.

Right - off the computer now - I've done something to my email and I can't access any at the moment - here's hoping MrVV can fix it!!

The big wide world

Good morning

Carrying on from my last post - I did make it outside for a little walk in the autumn sunshine - not far - part of our road is gravel and I struggled with that - didn't feel very safe underfoot. Never mind I got to where I was heading - a patch of toadstools/mushrooms that spring up every year;

I love the growing pattern of these - this patch appear first and then there are some inkcaps that appear on another part of the verge in a few weeks. We also get a fairy ring appear on the front garden at some point - hoping to be able to spot that and get a picture - need to get there before some destroys it when raking leaves.

Wednesday was gorgeous here - the sun shone and it was so warm for the beginning of November. The leaves on the cherry tree have got even more pretty;

I love the colours of autumn - a final burst of colour before the duller days of winter descend and of course all the trees loose their leaves. Now I'm no good on the names of plants but the berries on this one are pretty this year - am hoping they are something the bird population like;

Yesterday was a tad duller but at least it stayed dry. I had an appointment to see the physio in Aldeburgh, so we left early as there were a few things that needed collecting and of course the chance to have a a bag of chips on the seawall is never one to turn down! (Must make it clear - chips are a once a month treat - not every week though sometimes it must seem like that as I mention them loads!!).

The sea was quite rough and the seagulls were all huddled together on the beach to keep warm only moving if they thought someone was going to feed them - not a chance;

Oh my physio appointment - I've stuck lucky again :) Very nice and quite hunky. Yesterday was just seeing what movements/strength I've got and also trying to improve the circulation and getting the swelling to go down. This involved having my leg massaged - I think next time I might have to mention how stiff my shoulders are from using the crutches!!

Have a good weekend - hoping the forecast is wrong as MrVV & Little Son have a brass engagement I'd like to go along too. Otherwise there's a pile of crafting to finish, Strictly to watch, the last episode of Downton Abbey to enjoy and the finally the promise of a fireworks party too!

Are you sitting comfortably????

Then I'll begin - warning this is a long post - so much to tell you, so much to share.

Firstly, the Nursery Rhyme book from the Scavenger Hunt post was this one;

A present from my parents for my first Christmas in 1970. There are so many rhymes in here that I've never heard of anywhere else. When I was small I knew most of them off by heart - I read this loads to the boys when they were small and it was lovely to be told when they were in pre-school that they both had a good repertoire outside the normal Humpty Dumpty, Baa-Baa Black Sheep range.

I tried to choose a favourite page - very difficult as there are so many. I've picked this one as a certain MrVV is trying to compete with the bearded man at the moment. Seems he's given up shaving for the winter!

Secondly, with all this time on hands, I've been playing with MosaicMaker again, I've taken a leaf out of Sue @ The Quince Tree's book and decided to try to produce a monthly mosaic of some of my photos. I often take pics which I use for blogging but never do anything else with - at least this way some will get saved each month and possibly even turned into a calendar for the VV house for 2013!

My creative mojo has returned this week - rather handy as I've finally had to admit just how close Christmas is - really must get cracking with some makes for that. There's also birthdays in the offing and here's what I've been doing;

A block towards a quilt for a very special S&B friends big birthday later this month. A clever lady who is also a fellow blogger - Lottie has the task of turning all our work into something lovely.

Playing with super chunky yarn and a fat 10mm hook - this stuff works up really fast - just 3 rounds and its bigger than my normal blanket squares.

A felt & fabric Russian Doll decoration for another S&B birthday tonight.

The postman has visited again - I do like him when he brings parcels for me - this one is a little giveaway win from Jackie @ Sew Special Bears

You'll notice the ribbon has already been recycled on the russian doll!

Inside - some light reading - can't wait to start this one.

Finally, I've been trying to do something with my Folksy shop - I've not really done much to promote that. I've added more pictures to the tap at the top of the page and this morning, I've been taking photos for 3 new raggies which should get added later today or tomorrow. Right I think that's enough for today. The sun is shining and I feel the urge to try a little walk outside to take some photos. I did get out at the weekend for my first solo walk - just 1/3 of a mile around the town from my friends habbie shop then off to meet my family for coffee again - I did it but was totally shattered for the rest of the day! Photo Scavenger Hunt - October

Hello again

The tenth month of the year is almost at an end. Just two more months left in 2011.

Here are my efforts for this months Photo Scavenger Hunt;

Candlelit - fairly self explanatory. A pressie in a recent blog swap :) Smells lovely too.

Black cat - this was on a card I received in last years Autumn Swap - all hand-drawn and coloured.

Something eerie - an abandoned molar left as a subtle hint that despite his almost 14 years of age - little son still hopes the tooth fairy might visit! Actually she just hands over £1 and he disposes of the tooth as he sees fit.

Something golden - Aldeburgh chips - best eaten from the paper and covered in vinegar.

Graffiti/Street art - not something we see much around here luckily. So here's my cast on the morning of removal with instructions!!

Heritage - the Moot Hall in Aldeburgh - built in 1520. It now houses the offices of the Town Council and a Museum.

Crunchy leaves - those fallen from the giant climbing rose at the side of the house.

Fog/Mist - my favourite nursery rhyme when I was about 2 or 3. I still have my nursery rhyme book - its almost 41 years old now.

The book is Hilda Boswell's Treasury of Nursery Rhymes - apparently given to me Christmas 1970. More pics next time.

Pumpkin - pre-carving with our little ceramic pumpkin which holds a tealight.

River - the River Alde taken from the seawall @ Aldeburgh (same day as those chips were being eaten).

Witch's Hat / Broomstick - both actually on my little witch that hangs above my desk. I bought her from the Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle a few summers ago. (eyeballs courtesy of Picnik).

Sunset - I cheated on this one. I've not been able to catch a sunset this month - the house faces the wrong way. So this picture is one of a sunset I took on our hols in Dorset in August.

A New Dawn

Good afternoon

Just a quick end of the week post :) What a week - such freedom :)

Firstly just being able to get to the bedroom window the other morning to see the sky looking gorgeous as the sun started to make an appearance;

The walking cast is making such a difference - much more mobile - though in turn that means more tired. I can get to parts of the house that have been out of bounds for a few months. It means I can photos in my favourite naturally lit spot again. This parcel was from a lovely friend - spotted these and thought of me;

These little paper lanterns are gorgeous - I am going to make them all up and string them up across our fireplace - the design is very Orla Kiely don't you think?

A Lush bath wand and cute little Russian doll cookies cutters too.

The bath wand has been in use - oh the joy of being able to get in/out of the bath again. The first bath lasted over an hour - such bliss. Even better - my leg no longer can be mistaken for that of a gorilla ;)

I've been out and about too. Met 4 generations of my family for coffee the other morning - Grandma, my parents, 2 sisters and little niece & nephew. I also managed a walk around the supermarket (such a treat!) - my darling Dad carried my basket for me :)

I was also able to go back my Stitch & Bitch group on Wednesday night. Really didn't manage much stitching but it was lovely to catch up with friends and have a good natter.

This morning I've been busy working on a patchwork block for a pressie for a very special friend. I've also been trying to get the last few photos taken for this months Scavenger hunt - whilst I was outside I had to snap our cherry tree. The leaves are now turning all sorts of lovely red/orange shades;

What a gorgeous day here - so lovely, I'm off out in a tick. Going with my parents to visit my other Grandma.

No males here - they all left at 7.30 to go to work together! Amazing how the prospect of wages and lunch can get 2 teenage bedroom hobbits moving so early!!

Though according to one friend its also very BuzzLightyear too - I know which one I prefer!

Yep - today was back to the hospital time. Plaster cast removed to reveal one swollen foot with a wasted leg and ankle :( Instead of just having some lifts in my shoes they decided due to the poor movement and my previous injuries on the same leg, I'd be better to spend some time in a moonboot. Six weeks to be precise - one heel wedge to come out every 2 weeks and then an appointment with the Orthopedic Consultant at the beginning of December. Add to that some physio trips then you can see why its not great news. Some people (who shall remain nameless) thought I'd be up and running around straight away - this was despite me reading every post I could find on Achilles tear recovery on the internet and telling her that it wasn't likely.

At least this thing can come off at night and when I'm sitting down. I can also manage the doorstep to the house so hopefully some freedom can be gained. MrVV has promised to drop me in town when he's next working at home so I can have a wander around the shops :) Watch out charity shops - I've 8 weeks of bargains to catch up on!!

I can also finally have a bath - again this needs to happen when MrVV is about incase I need help getting in/out.

Anyhow - can't change anything so just need to get on with it. Am sure these 6 weeks will be much easier than the previous 8 - quote me on that when I have a bad day!! Plus hopefully I'll be allocated the hunky physio I saw earlier in the year ;)

Its half-term this week - hurrah. Boys very much have needed some lie-ins and down time. They've enjoyed pottering around. All homework was done on Friday so that they could spend time this week just doing whatever they wanted. Little Son decided that he'd like to bake on Friday morning - he'd noted the lack of sweet things in the cake tins and decided that wasn't good. A recipe he'd made at school was tweaked using whatever we had in the cupboard;

They were very scrummy - so scrummy in fact - he needs to do more baking tomorrow!!

Patchy

Good evening

Blimey I never meant to leave it almost a week between posts. Life has got in the way this week - a few disasters and a few triumphs too. We'll ignore the disasters and focus on the good stuff.

In my last post you saw a peak of the new Cath Kidson 'Patch' book. I've had a good read and this is for me the best of the craft books she's brought out. I decided to make up the kit that was included with it. Whilst I've made patchwork quilts before using cut squares, I've never worked with paper templates. The instructions were very easy to understand and it didn't take long till I'd the patchwork pieces tacked together;

The next stage took a while longer as it firstly involved ironing *yuck* and then remembering to take the work upstairs with me to sew it all together. My sewing machine was most surprised to see me and much to my delight despite being ignored for almost 2 months worked beautifully first time. Once the bag was together I decided to add some vintage buttons from my collection as it was too plain for my liking;

Now hands up - who was cold today? When I got up this morning and peaked out of the bedroom window I was surprised to see frost on the grass and the car windscreen all frozen up! When I got dressed I picked lots of layers but despite that I was still cold. You know it must be cold when despite lots of layers, a scarf, wrist warmers and blanket you are still shivering;

Not good - when MrVV came home at lunchtime - he was despatched upstairs to set the central heating going for a few hours. It was lovely to hear the gurgle of the pipes as they sprang to life and within a little while the house was feeling much warmer. In fact its off now and probably won't need to go on for a few days - just needed something to take the chill out of the air.

Since I've been on crutches I've not been able to wear a watch as it rubs on them. Now I like knowing what the time is and had a 'doh' moment when I remembered something I treated myself too much earlier in the summer - a gorgeous fob watch on a chain. I'd loved the Cath Kidston one but could not justify the expense - this one was a fraction of the price and just as lovely;

Hurrah half term has started here now - it couldn't come soon enough. Both boys are very tired and a some lie-ins and a break for the school routine are very much needed..I don't think I'll see them very early tomorrow morning. Far happier Friday

Good Afternoon :)

Thanks for all the comments on my last post. I am shocked at how badly wheelchair users are treated and am looking for a campaign I can support to heighten awareness and try and change attitudes - anyone know of one? I shall also be raising this with the supermarket in town and making them aware how some of their customers are treated. Even though my use is temporary I think making a stand will maybe help those who have no choice but to use one on a regular basis.

Anyhow - I'm far less grumpy today. Lots of things have helped that. One thing is I've found a mode of transport to get around the downstairs of our house - an office swivel chair on wheels. The floors are tiled and one of those means I can whizz around and actually do stuff. The best thing was being able to cook again - when you need both arms for crutches you can't carry stuff about - however if you're sitting down you can still reach cupboards & drawers and mostly importantly the cooker. I managed to make - bread, a shepherds pie for dinner and some rather madly decorated buns for the boys for afterschool;

Big son asked if I'd launched the icing etc from the other side of the room - cheeky thing! However he still managed to eat one!

Of course there's been plenty of sitting down with my foot up. Time spent;

Sewing up crochet and also sewing those ends in. The squares blanket is now 60 squares big and the giant granny has 37 rounds. Still more to do but both are now big enough to use if necessary.

As I did when I was deciding what to read first - this months Country Living magazine or the new Cath Kidston 'Patch' book - choices, choices. It ended up with a dip into both. I hope to start the project that came with the book sometime very soon.

Even this view of the kitchen dresser top cheers me up - not tidy but a mix of colours, patterns and things that I love.

I even got out of the house yesterday - not just that but out of Suffolk too! MrVV had a delivery to make over the border in Norfolk to a village in the heart of the Broads. I went along for a ride. The SatNav decided it would take us via the scenic route and we went through some gorgeous countryside and past loads of boats out on the Broads. We ended up on a boat too - the chain ferry at Reedham which takes you across the River Yare - we didn't plan this but decided it added to the adventure;

Can you see the wind pump in the distance? There are so many of these scattered all over the broads.

We even stopped off for lunch out on the way home :)

Hurrah the weekend starts once the boys arrive home from school. Lie-ins are planned by some and some of us shall be watching the rugby. I shall be cheering on Wales in the first match and probably the All Blacks in the second one. Hoping it remains sunny so we'll get a wheel around somewhere too.

Grumpy Wednesday

I don't think I got out of the wrong side of bed - in fact I can't as my crutches are always in the same place each night. Perhaps its the full moon tonight that's making me grumpy or it could just be a case of girlie hormones??

I've a feeling that the large lump of metal and purple plaster on my leg is probably the main cause. I can't get comfy in bed at night and often end up in a tangle of duvet and with cramps in my leg & foot. Just another 12 days to go - hurrah.

Something else that's made me cross is if I am in one of these;

And I am out and about with MrVV - I become invisible. Several times we've been shopping - I've put the stuff on the belt and gone to pay only to have the staff ignore me and speak to MrVV. We've soon put them right. Also out & about people seem not to see us and expect us to dive out of the way rather than them just side step. Don't even get me started on all the shops I can't get into - their loss - I'll buy from elsewhere then.

One final grump - this one is a few weeks old but deserves airing. I've done a few reviews now for stuff and have happily recommended stuff to you lovely readers. Well this times, here's one to avoid!! Look at these two pictures and see if you can spot the difference??

Yep one is a red converse hi-top and the other is a white converse lo-top. Well I ordered a pair of the red ones for big son from a company called Rubbersole

The first problem the parcel took 2 weeks to arrive - not great for a company promising next day delivery! When it eventually arrived it contained the wrong shoes - the white ones. I contacted the company explained the problem and they arranged to resend my order. Another 5 days passes, another parcel arrives - guess what wrong again!! I managed eventually to find a phone number and spoke to their 'Customer Services' department - useless. They couldn't grasp that it was their error - I'd 2 pairs of wrong shoes and they couldn't promise if we'd a 3rd go it would be right. I gave up - got my refund and ordered elsewhere. The only saving grace was they supplied a free returns label. My advice - don't go there - not worth the hassle :(

Right off to find a cat to kick ;)

Just a few makes :)

Good evening

Autumn has blown in with a blast here - the trees are being blustered about and I could see the garden slowly starting to be covered in leaves when I was watching out the window earlier. Its much cooler too which I'm quite glad about - I love hunting out my long sleeved t-shirts and cardi's. The downside is the days are really starting to feel shorter - not quite light when we get up in the morning and its getting dark before dinner most nights now.

I've spent less time this week reading and more time crafting. Apart from more squares for my granny blanket (nos 51-55) and a few rounds on the giant granny one. I've also;

Turn a cross-stitched mini-sampler into a heart. A clever sister did the cross-stitch for me (I've never mastered that) and then I was tasked with finishing if off to suit me.

The first of many fabric apples made from the pattern in this months Molliemakes magazine.

I finished my crochet scarf - with the cold weather due soon, I think you can never have enough scarves. I often when its really cold wear one in the house and they ended up scattered about all over the place.

A friend sent me this thrifted wooden belt buckle - she thought I'd like it. I think I might try and use it as a scarf ring - when you've got one of those scarves that just keeps coming unravelled - it might just hold it into place.

This morning I spent time having a rummage in my sewing room for supplies - have decided to bow to the inevitable and start making some Christmas decorations - probably just some felt gingerbread people and some of the gangly felt robins I made last year. There was enough material to get on with but I also need to go and pay our favourite Felt Fairy a visit and order some supplies. I am hoping to find a craft fair locally between now and December - failing that I shall list them in my much neglected Folksy shop!

Wear It Pink for Breast Cancer Campaign

Good afternoon

Just a temporary change of colour to promote an event taking place at the end of the month - Friday 28th October to be precise.

It is Breast Cancer Campaign's Wear It Pink Day.

What is Wear It Pink Day? Its an annual event organised Breast Cancer Campaign. It is their biggest fundraising event. Put on something pink and donate £2 to Breast Cancer Campaign - it couldn’t be easier to help save lives! I am sure that far too many of us have had some experience of this disease. I lost a school friend at the beginning of the year and another is undergoing treatment at the moment.

In 2010, hundreds of thousands of you wore pink, raising over £2 million. Events can be big or small. Perhaps persuading work colleagues to take part or just wear pink yourself and donate your £2. I know every year that a walk is organised by a group of local ladies. They always walk down our lane - they mark their route with pink ribbons tied to trees etc (removing them next day). I shall try and watch out for them again this year and try and get some photos.

Autumn Swap - The Results

Good evening

Monday again - why do weekends go so quickly? What a hot one it was here in Suffolk - too hot for me and for once I was glad to be indoors and enjoying the breeze from open doors/windows and the fans in the kitchen.

Anyhow back to Friday - a knock at the door and a postie who's now learnt to give me extra time to get there to answer it. Usually its just something for MrVV but this time it was for me - a parcel no less. I knew it was my Autumn Swap on from Dawn @ Rattling On.

I had signed up for this swap before the accident and after I been paired with Dawn, I had a panic that I might not be able to fulfil it as I'd liked. However we chatted via email and agreed to keep it simple and allow some extra time.

Now I completely forgot to take pics of what I sent to Dawn - however she's taken some pics and they can be seen here (2nd October post). The crochet scarf was the first one I'd made and I loved doing those squares. So much so I also made one for a sister who has a birthday this week.

Anyhow - you'd like to see pics of the pressies I received - here we go;

All wrapped up in red/white tissue - reminds me of the red spotty mushrooms from fairy tales.

Inside were - hand knitted mittens, a scarf, chocolate, a cinnamon candle, apple & cinnamon teabags and a gorgeous Ladybird mug.

Here's a better picture of the mug - I love the Ladybird illustrations and I remember reading this book as a child and also the boys reading this when they were learning to read in Nursery.

Bring on the colder weather - can't wait to wear this gorgeous mittens.

At the moment I am avoiding signing up for any swaps as I am still worried about how mobile I'll be for a while - however there was one I couldn't resist and I know that I can easily fulfil the criteria even if it means MrVV gets to push me around a few charity shops!! Its here at Faith, Hope & Charity Shopping - its open till 15th October so sign up if you fancy something different? I took part in the summer one and it was great fun and there were some great gifts sent & received.

Right Monday night - 7.30pm - must be time to call my Mum!!

Photo Scavenger Hunt - September

Hello again

Well that was September then - 3/4 of 2011 has gone by - just those final 3 months left.

I rose to the challenge of finding all 12 photos for this months hunt from the relative safety of my sofa. As ever there's some artistic licence and sideways thinking for some of the headings. Please bear in mind that the light in the kitchen isn't great so some of the colours aren't as I'd like - but better to attempt them all rather than not at all. Here we go;

Apples - I love English apples - can't beat the taste.

Back to school - just some of the new bits of uniform Little Son needed for his move from Middle to High School.

Football/Soccer Season - a sideways thinking one here. Delia is a major shareholder in one of our localish football teams! We are not a football household so this one required some thinking!!

Harvest - this years crop from our little pear tree. Its just 2 years old - last year there was one pear and this year 7 - perhaps next year we'll have enough for cider!

(Public) Phone Box - again more sideways thinking. The box my new phone came in ;)

A pile of things - magazines & sewing stuff that live on the dresser beside my kitchen sofa.

Relaxation - I've done lots of that this month. Sitting with feet up and reading a magazine.

Taller than you - well little son is now just an inch off my height and here he is with his much taller big brother.

Desk/Workspace - that corner of the kitchen again! The pile on the floor beside the sofa includes - crochet projects, knitting projects and a bag of felt/stuffing!

What is in your bag?? - the contents of my CK spotty messenger include - phone, camera, comb, chewing gum, a pen, tissues, sunglasses, makeup bag and a cardi.

Hope you've enjoyed my take on things this month - I look forward to seeing what others have done and of course am ready for the challenge of another months list from the comfort of my sofa!!

Wiggle those toes!!

Good evening

Hurrah - we've just passed the half-way point in this plaster cast wearing phase of my life :) A trip to the hospital was made this morning and my plaster has been modified again - this time with the aid of something that was a cross between an angle grinder and a pizza cutter! It proved to be a bit of a battle to remove the section of plaster as it was so thick - there was talk of taking it all off and starting again but eventually brute force won and a piece about 4" square and about 1/2" thick was removed from the front of my cast.

I can now start to try to move my foot upwards - very carefully. It is apparently very vulnerable at the moment to knocks and could easily tear again - nothing like making me even more scared of walking then!!

After leaving the hospital there was quick trip around one of the massive supermarkets in my wheelchair- where else can you get birthday cards, a slotted spoon, slippers for teenagers and new magazine all under one roof??

This afternoon I've been following instructions and taking it very easy!

And starting a new crochet project - just a little one. A scarf for me - we picked up these colours at the weekend - the photo isn't great but the colours are - denimy blue, mulberry and a green;

I think that lot should keep me busy this week - trying to take my mind off another treat that's had to be cancelled. We were supposed to go away next weekend for our Wedding Anniversary - that's now been postponed until the spring :(

I am getting frustrated at not being able to do things - you know it must be bad when I even start to wish I could do the dusting or even clean a bathroom! Am sure that will pass soon though!

Right - off to call my Mum - I promised to let her know how I got on today.

Autumnal Equinox

Good afternoon

We've been building to the point for a few weeks now and it was very obvious this morning before I checked the calendar that this point had arrived. Misty mornings with a warm Indian Summer day - it must be the Autumnal Equinox. After today the days will shorten and in a few weeks it will be getting dark just after the boys come home from school. However its not all doom and gloom - autumn brings forth some wonderful things;

The colours as the leaves turn orange, red and brown;

When they were smaller the boys loved to collect conkers and acorns and of course there's the fun of running through piles of fallen leaves.

Darker evenings mean that its going to get cooler too - I must crack on with my crochet blankets. The Giant Granny blanket is coming on well - the beauty of this one is it keeps you warm as you add each new round;

Another thing I love on cooler and darker days is to snuggle up with a good book or magazine. This week as I've been confined mainly to indoors, I worked my way through another pile of reading;

After all this talk of autumn and keeping warm etc, I've just checked the weekend forecast. Seems here in Suffolk we're promised an Indian Summer - so the cropped trousers might come out again and hopefully someone will be around to wheel me out in the sunshine and possibly we'll even make a trip to the seaside!

All-tea-towels.co.uk - Review

Good evening

Another day - another review. Seems I was one of a few asked by Al @ www.all-tea-towels-co.uk if I'd like to receive two free tea-towels to review. Of course the answer had to be yes. The biggest dilemma was which 2 of the 100's of gorgeous designs to choose - I got it down to a short list of 10 and then closed my eyes and chose 2. Here's they are;

I love this patriotic Union Flag design - if you look carefully, you can see the buttons in the middle - 2 of my favourite things in one.

For my 2nd one I choose this retro design - the lady sort of reminded me of Mum in her younger swinging sixties years and of the slogan sums me up rather nicely.

The UK design is 100% cotton whilst the Domestic Goddess one is a linen/cotton mix. Both are currently undergoing field trials in the kitchen and are doing a sterling job - bear in mind that my kitchen is currently being run by 3 males who don't have the gentle touch of us girls. My 13 year old son is now chief washing machine operator and these tea-towels will be at his mercy at the weekend when he does a tea-towel wash!

The ups and downs of everyday life.

Good afternoon

Thanks for all the comments on my last post. I was right Scooby disappeared off upstairs with little son and was last seen in the heap of cuddlies that still share his space every night.

Its been an interesting week - I am surprised how quickly each day goes even those when I'm home alone. I guess that might be to do with how slow I am at doing things - even a simple trip upstairs to get washed and dressed takes about 45 minutes - I can normally get sorted in under 20 minutes.

Anyhow the ups;

A trip to Aldeburgh on Friday lunchtime - we sat in the car on the sea-wall eating fish & chips - blissful - was lovely and blustery and the sea spray was coming in the car window :)

My wonderful sisters who've been visiting loads. One sister is keeping me supplied in books - I've said I don't mind which authors - I'm happy to read anything. I read these 3 last week - would recommend all of them to you.

A pretty CKish blouse found by a sister in a charity shop - can't wait to wear this when I can wear my skirts again.

The same sister on a shopping trip spotted this cardi and bought it for me - its actually hot pink and red - the light in the kitchen isn't great for taking pics.

The downs;

This great metal frame that's been plastered into my cast since last Monday - its meant to help me walk but I am struggling with it. It does allow me to stand for a little while without my sticks but only a few minutes.

The doctor at the hospital rejected my shoe choice last week (converse pumps) - apparently they are not supportive enough. Instead he recommended some trainers that would be suitable for running. Never has the purchase of new shoes been so awful. I am not a trainer girl and it pained me to spend money on something so ugly. Again the colours aren't great - these are shocking pink and black - no way was I going to wear white trainers. At least teamed with a flowery sock they are ok and I must admit they have eased the aches in my good knee.

I discovered this morning that an important date had passed me by - this little blog was 2 on Saturday. I think a belated party and giveaway will be held once this silly plaster cast has been removed.

Right off now to enjoy the peace & quiet before the boys come home from school.

Scooby Doo spook-a-licious snacks - Review

Good afternoon

For a while now I've been getting emails asking me to reviews various products. I've mainly said no as I've not been interested in the item or its been something thats mainly for non-UK markets. However a few weeks ago I was approached by a PR company asking if I'd be interested in reviewing and receiving samples of a new range of sweets from the company Swizzels Matlow. I knew which company they meant and agreed to do this.

Swizzels Matlow have produced sweets for over 80 years and are responsible for some of my favourites - Lovehearts, Drumstick lollies and Parma Violets. I remember my little Grandma coming to visit us when we were small - she always had been into the village shop before hand and came with a bag of sweets for us all. Always inside were LoveHearts & Parma Violets - the smell of these takes me back to my childhood in an instant.

Swizzels Matlow have teamed up with Warner Bros to launch a new collection of Scooby Doo inspired sweetie snacks. Again Scooby Doo formed part of my childhood - we'd often watch the cartoons on TV and will Shaggy, Fred, Scooby, Velma and Daphne to outsmart another crook - those pesky kids ;) This show has now being running for over 40 years and is the longest running animation series on TV with over 360 episodes. I know in particular that little son loves this still - if he gets the chance he'll have an SD marathon watching session on TV.

Anyhow - the important part - the arrival of a parcel;

Inside - one of each of the 3 new products - Scooby-Doo Chew Bar, Gruesome Gums and Fiendish Fizzies - along with a rather plush beanie Scooby - I just know he'll disappear into little sons room very soon!

Before the taste testing could begin - a few photos. The Gruesome Gums along with all the products in the range are free from artificial colours and flavours. They are shaped like characters/items from the cartoon. Shaggy and Scooby were particularly tasty ;)

The Fiendish Fizzies were my favourite - like the LoveHearts each sweet is embossed with a symbol/saying from the show.

The taste testers (big son, little son & I) enjoyed all the different sweets and will be looking out for these in the shops near us. I have a feeling that I will be getting my annual visit from 3 small trick or treaters next month and these would make ideal pressies for their treat bags.

Out & About

Good evening

Sorry I've been quiet this past week - I've not really done much that is blog worthy. Lots of sitting around, reading, a bit of crochet and lots of listening to the radio. The best bit has been when friends and family have called round for a natter - that's the bit I'm missing most, getting out and seeing people.

One visitor was my friend who runs the S&B group - she brought with her a card (full of cheeky messages) and a gorgeous bunch of flowers;

Of course last week saw the boys go back to school. That didn't go entirely smoothly - little son developed a nasty ear infection which meant a trip to the doctors and him missing his first day of high school. He managed the other 3 days of school last week - dosed up and by Friday night he was shattered. Luckily after lots of sleep and rest this weekend, he's finally on the mend, if slightly deaf in one ear.

The highlight of the weekend for me, was leaving the house! We've hired a wheelchair and Sunday afternoon we finally had time to get out and use it. We headed to Aldeburgh and eventually found a suitable parking space and I got my first taste of sea air in ages. The menfolk all took turns to push - of course I knew that trusting big son wasn't a good idea - it was definitely hairy at times as we lurched towards walls and kerbs - however he had more control that he let on and survived the trip unscathed. We even stopped by the boating pond for an ice cream.

Trust me - there were loads of pretty model yachts being sailed - I just managed not to photograph any of them!! Beside the yacht pond is a statue of a dog - this is in memory of 2 doctors who served the town many years ago. Its been stolen a few times but the town have always raised funds to replace it. Well if going out once wasn't exciting enough - I've been out today too. Back to the hospital for a modification to my cast - I can now stand using both legs - though I still my crutches to walk and can't walk with my bad foot down - that is something that will come eventually.

There are so many lovely swaps going on in blogland at the moment and I've been sorely tempted but have resisted as I have no idea how mobile I'll be for a while. I was signed up for one swap before the accident (the autumn one) - my lovely swap partner Dawn @ Rattling On has been very patient and understanding with me. I'm slowly getting sorted with that one and we're aiming to swap towards the end of the month.

Birthday swap ladies - you will get your parcels but they may be a bit late - depends on when I can find someone to push me about around the sort of shops I like to visit. MrVV is wonderful but I don't think he's up to dealing with swap parcels!!

Flowers & Thank you

Good evening

Thank you for all the comments & emails - they've made me feel much better :) I did indeed survive being 'minded' by big son last week. Even better I survived his cooking on Friday night! MrVV was supposed to be home from London in time to cook but it being Friday there were delays, cancellations and breakdowns. The choice were not eat or get big son to do it. The boy did well and he even did the washing up!

The weekend meant more visitors - our kettle worked overtime and I think we'll run out of teabags soon! I've been very spoilt and had lots of lovely pressies & cards;

Today we've spent time making sure the boys have everything they need for back to school tomorrow - bags have been packed, new pens/pencils put into cases and uniforms hang on cupboards ready to wear.

I normally miss the boys when they return to school but this year even more so. They have been so great at helping this past week - they are learning new skills which will come in useful in later life and its made them aware of some of the things I do that maybe they don't normally notice.

I've been plodding on with my making when its been quiet. Both blankets are growing steadily. At some point I need a rummage in my sewing room for some different supplies - I just need to remember that when I'm actually upstairs - the journey up & down is still rather tiring.

I don't know about you but I've noticed the change in season the past few days. Saturday was warm & sunny but today has been quite cool & blustery. I expect when I can next get outside I'll notice a real change. Hoping to have sorted a wheelchair hire by the weekend - being indoors all the while is rather boring.

A pinch and a punch

How was the first day of September for you?

Mines followed its new routine of getting about slowly, asking for help for the simplest things and moving slower than a tortoise with its legs tied together! I looked at the new photo hunt list this morning - I am going to have to be imaginative this month - I wonder if I'll find all 12 things from my sofa??

I've seen all of my sisters this week - they all now know where everything is in my kitchen to make tea and its been lovely to see them all. Baby sister came today and painted my toenails for me - very posh :) Another sister came yesterday bearing gifts;

Apparently she saw this and thought of me - can't think why ;)

She's also a car boot addict and was out over the weekend at several sales. She's a vinyl collector (her blog is here) and she's got a great eye for a bargain. She bought me these pretty cups & saucers;

The Irises on each one appear to be hand-painted as they are slightly different - going to look these up for I start playing with the glue & fabric!!

I've made a few things as well as several rounds of crochet. A pressie for a S&B group friend (need to get a teenager to drop this off tomorrow);

I thought I might as well make a few bits for the shop in town too - thought I'd try & see if eggcup pincushions would go down as well at the cups;

You'll have to excuse my photos - I can't manage the step into the conservatory at the moment so I have to take pics in the kitchen and the light there isn't as good :(

Right back to the sofa - I've promised to call my Mum.

Oh and wish me luck - MrVV & Little Son @ band tonight - so Big Son is Mummy minding!

Photo Scavenger Hunt - August

Good afternoon

Here we are again - another month has passed by very quickly. Quite an eventful too. Here are my efforts for this month in the order they were taken - as usual there's some artistic licence used for a few!!

Something Ancient - I don't you can get much older than Stonehenge - we stopped here on way down to Dorset.

Boat - on the beach at Sidmouth

Mountain - of washing from the holiday!

Bread - homemade bread rolls

Something Bizarre - a scooter riding OAP - dressed as a Nun complete with blacked up face - just part of the local carnival parade! The theme was Movies and this lady was Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act.

Funfair - proper old fashioned fun, Gallopers.

Market - the seafront carnival market at Aldeburgh Carnival - it gets bigger & bigger each year.

Street food - no carnival would be complete without a cone of hot chips with plenty of vinegar.

A Fountain - actually a fountain pen - a 21st birthday pressie from an old boss.

Sport - big sons badminton raquet & case.

Fabric - my scraps drawer - one day I want to use these to make a hexy quilt.

Picnic - every meal at the moment is a sofa picnic!!

I've seen the list for September and look forward to seeing how I can improvise those from the comfort of my sofa!!

Off to see how others have done this month.

Pretty in purple

Good Evening

Thanks for all the lovely comments including the cheeky ones on my last post :)

I promise never to can-can again. I will be honest there hadn't even been much booze involved and there won't be any for a long while now.

I was back at the hospital first thing for a checkup and plaster change. I managed to have the nurses laughing when I had to confess how I'd done this - apparently I shall now be top of their silly ways to injure yourself list!

Anyhow a nice new lighter cast has been fitted and it will be on until 24th October with a few modifications booked in too - roll on 2 weeks time when I get a thingy fitted so I can finally put my foot down and try to walk again. I opted for purple - it matches the shoe I'm wearing at the moment and the boot I'll wear if the weather goes colder.

Apart from that and a few visits that's all I've achieved today. MrVV & the boys are getting to grips with domestic stuff and are doing great jobs as nursemaids.

Tomorrow I hope to get some crochet done and I need to finish a birthday pressie for a S&B group friend.

Off to see what lovely things everyone has done this weekend.

BTW - Liz, I won't be at the Greenpeace Fair this weekend and Claire, I won't make Henham Steam Rally either - gutted on both accounts :(

Whoops!

Evening

Well this certainly isn't what I planned (a) for the bank holiday weekend and (b) for my 300th post!

The school reunion last night was brilliant - 4 1/2 hours of great fun, chat and catching up. Then after one record and a dance - Bad Manners Can-Can, disaster! A ping in my left calf and searing pain. After a restless night and a chat with NHS Direct, a trip to A&E was made. One torn Achilles Tendon - one temporary cast - a pair of crutches and enforced sofa rest!

Back tomorrow for a proper coloured cast - apparently I have a huge choice of colours - boys are wondering if flowery is an option!!

Heyho - let this be a lesson - middle-aged women and the can-can don't mix!!

Another crafty catch-up

Good evening

Blimey another weekend is almost upon us - not quite sure where this week has gone.

Apart from all the usual domestic stuff, I've had time to do quite a bit of crafting;

One raggy for an order. She is heading off to the USA with some other dolls I made earlier in the year. A last minute extra when the recipients found out they were expecting another baby!

Another raggy for a special friends 40th birthday - she was handed over at S&B last night and was an instant hit.

The giant granny square blanket has grown - currently lap blanket sized - a few more rounds and it will be big enough to snuggle under during the cooler months whilst crafting/reading in the evenings.

Another 10 squares have been added to my other blanket too - this one is slower as there are so many ends to sew in on each square.

Whilst cooking dinner the other night, I glanced out of the kitchen window and saw a strange sight on the summer house roof;

A flock/gaggle/gang of juvenile pheasants! Shame they later took off again - I had a plan that involved fattening them up for Christmas dinner!

Lastly for this evening - whilst ordering some things for little son from Amazon, I made the mistake of having a quick browse in the suggestions for me list - I'd seen this book on a few other blogs and was tempted as the price was just too cheap;

I'm a few chapters in and its definitely a keeper - I might share it with friends but its one that won't be passed on to the charity shops.

Have a good bank holiday weekend - am hoping the weather is kind - it would be lovely to go somewhere as a family - probably Southwold. I still have a few Scavenger Hunt pictures to find too.

Roll out the barrels

Good evening

Did you have a good weekend?? It was a good one here - mostly sunny with only one downpour on Saturday evening. Saturday was spent mainly outside in the garden catching up on weeding and tidying. Though I did sneak off for a couple of hours in the morning to meet up with some school friends. We are having a 25 year reunion next weekend and this was a chance to catch up with a small group for a natter & coffee before hand. Lovely to see some friends I've not seen for over 20 years but thanks to the wonder of facebook we're all getting back into contact with each other again.

The big event is next weekend - a party for approx 100 of us - all except 2 will have turned 41 and if we last till after midnight then even those will reach that milestone.

I was woken on Sunday morning by sunbeams peaking around the curtains - rather than have a lie in, I got up - rather nice to have an hour to myself before all the menfolk woke up. A chance to have a cup of tea in the garden and listen to the world wake up.

Once all the family were awake and the essential jobs done, MrVV & I headed out for the afternoon. We headed a short way north to the village of Westleton - Barrel Fair time again - definately not something to be missed.

Of course it wouldn't be a village fete without Morris Dancers.

Or their band of musicians.

We had a lovely afternoon - sitting in the sunshine, drinking cider (me), eating a tasty lunch (both of us), listening to music and of course watching the dancers.

I realised this morning that we've only 2 weeks of school holidays left - there's still a few things we need to buy - any tips on the slowing down of the rate of growth for teenage male feet would be greatly appreciated ;)

I've been busy crafting again over the past week or so - more crochet and some sewing but I've show you all of that next time - I've just remembered I need to call my Mum!!

Free & Frugal

Good morning :)

Hope the sun is shining where you are - its a gorgeous day here. Just despatched the boys to a sisters for a day of light gardening :) Lovely and peaceful here now! Just the sound of MrVV tapping away on his keyboard and Ken Bruce chatting away in the background.

When we visited my Grandma earlier this week, we left with a huge pile of lovely free food - blackberries from her drive (collecting these each week towards jam making), plums from her orchard and eggs from a friend of hers;

I think next week when we go, the pears & apples should be ready for picking too - thinking crumbles and apple/blackberry jam time - hurrah :)

Within our (quite large) family, we've operated our own version of freecycle for years - if we've something we no longer need whether its furniture, clothes or toys - things are offered to other family members first. Some items are on their 3rd or 4th owners now - there's one bookcase that's appeared in so many houses over the years - it was 2nd hand when my parents bought it 35 years ago! Well for months now we've needed a replacement wardrobe for little son - his was a cheapie we bought for big sons bedroom when he was a baby - its moved house twice and really had seen better days. The trouble with wanting a replacement was, we don't like having to go furniture shopping - most of our house is furnished with samples/seconds from MrVV's business but sadly he no longer sells wardrobes :(. Well good old MIL came to the rescue - she decided that she no longer needs a spare bedroom so a sturdy pine wardrobe was spare to a good home - ours! With the addition of a shelf upcycled from the old one - it now should last little son into adulthood :)

Heavily influenced by my Grandparents, I've always been one to be frugal - I don't like waste especially food. I think hearing all the stories of wartime rationing and how everything got used has stuck in my mind. So when there's only 2 of you for lunch and the fridge turns up 1/2 a head of broccoli, an onion and few potatoes then its time to make the first soup of the season and very scrummy it was too;

Right the washing machine has finished - time to hang things outside in the sunshine and then head off into town to do a post run.

Carnival Time

Good afternoon

Just a quickish post to let you know I've not vanished off the face of the earth! Instead I've been rather busy with family life and also crafting. However yesterday afternoon was it was time to brave the crowds and head for the first time in a few years to the Carnival in Aldeburgh. Rumour is it that's it was going to be the last one and I decided that I really should go along and support this event. The fact the sun was shining also helped that decision. Just Little Son & I - Big Son was doing the car parking with his Explorer troop and MrVV was busy as ever in his office.

One of my nieces & her Grandparents as Alice in Wonderland and the White Rabbit (her Grandma was a Johnny Depp style Mad Hatter) - they did well and got 2nd prize in their class.

It wouldn't be Carnival without the Suffolk School of Samba.

Of course I took loads more photos but many of them might be appearing later in the month as part of the August Photo Scavenger Hunt ;) A lovely afternoon and it was fab to bump into friends and have a natter. There's another great local event this weekend - the Barrel Fair @ Westleton and I'm hoping that the weather is kind as MrVV & I are planning on spending the afternoon there.

Its been a while since I've taken part in any blog swaps (with the exception of the ongoing Birthday Swap - another parcel to post for this weekend ;) ). I spotted this one earlier and it seems simple enough - its over at Blueberry Heart - go have a look and see if its your sort of thing too;

Right off to have a good blog reading session, think about tonight's dinner and also attach some limbs to a Raggy that is supposed to be in her new home this weekend!!

Hooky goodness

Good evening

Finally today I've finished cleaning the camping gear and getting the boys to help put it away. We probably won't be needing our big tent again till next summer - there's a chance of an overnight camp with friends in a few weeks but that only requires the small tents. Despite the best attempts of the british summer I've got the holiday washing all done too.

One of the best bits about camping is the time I have to do things I enjoy - last summer it was knitting and this year it was crochet. I managed to get loads more squares done for my blanket and once we were home I was able to add them to the ones already finished - 30 sewn together so far with another 10 hopefully by the end of this week;

Hopefully by the time its winter, all 100 squares will be done and I'll be snuggly and warm in the evenings :)

Whilst we were away I made a start on another blanket too - this time a giant granny square in cotton;

As you can see there's a long way to go on this one. Am stuck for a few days though as I've run out of the green and was gutted to find the shop in town no longer has it. Luckily I've found some online so hopefully I'll have a choice of projects again by the weekend!!

Just before we went away I treated myself to some colourful hooks - I'd seen these on another blog and though they'd be a nice treat for a new crocheter;

That's really all for today folks. Looking forward to the rest of the week - I've got sisters coming on several days for coffee & catch-ups and a party at the weekend. The boys seem to be keeping themselves busy over the hols - disappearing out for hours on their bikes and also keeping our local cinema in business.

The Not So Wild West

Good morning :) from slightly soggy Suffolk.

Am up early as my 2 brass players have headed out for a long day at the races. They are playing for the Royal British Legion Race Day at Newmarket. It seems to involve an earlyish start and a car load of clothes, instruments and music.

Anyhow, you might have noticed I've been missing for a while - the reason. Summer holidays time - back to Devon & Dorset again.

We enjoyed our stay last year so much, we booked back into the same campsite so we could visit some places we liked lots again and also visit some places we'd not had time to see last year at all. Even this year with 7 days we didn't quite get to everywhere we wanted too so shall be looking for a campsite in East Dorset for next summer!!

Right - photos - are you sitting comfortably?? then I'll begin;

Our home for 7 days - 6 of which were lovely and sunny - the last night and the morning of packing up were not. It was very wet - no pics though of us packing up whilst wearing jimjams, crocs and raincoats!!

One of the main reasons for heading back to that area was the Folk West at Sidmouth - we visited several times - watching buskers, street magicians and lots & lots of Morris Dancers;

These pirate ones were my favourite - how they didn't get their swords tangled up I'll never know.

When it all got too much for some - we just headed to the park for a rest;

We spent Saturday in Bridport and West Bay. We loved the market in Bridport - a proper one with a great mix of stalls. Lovely things were bought for dinner and I had a good look round the vintage/2nd hand stalls too - find a lovely vintage style tin. West Bay is a lovely place - a great mix of traditional and modern;

Of course boys can only cope with folky stuff if other days out are more to their tastes. We headed to the Haynes Motor Museum where there were plenty of shiny red cars for them to look at. I found a comfy sofa and might have had 40 winks!! It didn't take them long to find some hi-tech amusement;

Twas rather worrying that our driver was so bad at these games! He spent most of the time crashing and bouncing off the barriers!!

A trip to the West Country wouldn't be complete without a cream tea - I prefer to put my cream on first but I know others think it should be jam first;

For the boys one of the best bits about the campsite was the swimming pool - they spent many hours in there messing about with new friends. For me the best bit was the free range chickens who acted as a mobile tidying unit - no crumb spent long on the ground. This year they seemed to bring their friend - mobile alarm clock with them - quite funny how he seemed to appear outside out tent at 9am each morning to make sure the boys were awake!!

A lovely week - apart from the packing up bit. The journey home was a long one due to the rain - in fact it was too much for some - they dozed off on a pile of pillows & towels;
